Save land
Ferncliffe forest wilding is working to secure a five-hectare (12.5-acre) former citrus farm called Glengarriff for long-term conservation and rewilding. The property is right next to the proposed Ferncliffe Protected Environment. It is already a haven for large mammals, birds and other biodiversity – but is in immediate danger of sale for residential development.
We have secured nearly three quarters of the amount needed — but must raise about R1m more. As fast as we can…
Ferncliffe Forest itself is small, but highly important, both biologically and ecologically. It falls within the Maputaland-Pondoland-Albany Biodiversity Hotspot and no fewer than three endangered vegetation types are found within its borders. It forms part of an irreplaceable Critical Biodiversity Area, as determined by a KZN Biodiversity Stewardship site assessment in 2021. The forest provides the city of Pietermaritzburg with ecosystem services such as flood mitigation, water catchment and air quality improvement. It is an asset to be treasured. But unless further fragmentation and a tide of invasive vegetation is stopped, its degradation and demise appear to be inevitable.
Already, development eats at its edges. Can you help us to grow Ferncliffe Forest?
