Large spotted genet

Genetta tigrina
Conservation status: Least Concern (LC)

Elongated, spotted creatures with spectacular ringed tails; these nocturnal animals are carnivores (but not related to cats). They hunt rodents in particular, plus snakes, birds (hens, beware), insects and amphibians.

In turn, records show they’ve been preyed on by crowned eagles – and humans use their skins in traditional attire plus as stick-fighting charms. They disperse seeds and keep rat and mice populations in check, both ecosystem benefits.
